Are fears of fascism overwrought? I have been a little impatient with academic debates along the lines of "Is it fascism or isn't it," thinking that if democratic institutions are destroyed. that's close enough. But a friend changed my thinking. Fascism better understood means the saturation of everyday life and culture with authoritarianism. We are not there yet, but once that has transpired, it's too late to do anything about it.
