"The Woke Saviors of DSA"
I’m provoked by this bit from CounterPunch, which is still worth following. Some articles are very bad, others are pretty good. This one was not good. It is targeted on DSA but applies to a broader swath of the U.S. left. Do I mean you? If the shoe fits . . .
Sorting it out
The solicitousness regarding the deaf (hey, I'm half deaf, also fat & old), the twinkling, the pronouns don't bother me. I'm happy to go along with any of it, but it marks us as weird to most people--a hindrance to organizing. I could add the sensitivity to language, I put it in the same category. It’s not limited to the left. No small part of the clamor over #MeToo and “cultural appropriation” is dumb. For instance, the uproar over the famous Al Franken titty-grab photo was bullshit.
On the so-called class issues, the problem isn't the lack of them, but the way they are treated, namely the fantasy that they can be addressed without any interaction with people doing actual legislation. And others are just utopian silliness (e.g., abolish the Senate).
And finally, this is really bad, as in deeply uninformed:
Other items call for defunding the police (which is anathema to the working class), gender justice, a Green New Deal, and abolition of white supremacy, all of which seem like important, if standard liberal issues, but have little to do with the class war.
Race and gender are intrinsic to class and reflect DSA's major blind spot. I assign to it the awkwardly phrased "class reductionist economism."
