To me, as a kid, "You've got to be taught to hate and fear, It's got to be drummed in you dear little ear," had an important impact on my developing political outlook. It seemed to help explain the fascist family that lived next door.
I found "Younger than Springtime" to be incredibly romantic when I was young. Now it seems like a horrible case of child abuse.
Oh, Max, I just love this. I, too, remember most of this stuff from my parents’ hi fi record albums. Also, Mack the Knife.
And the Music Man! Other day, we’re driving around Tucson and see a campaign sign for a “fella by the name of Hill”, and I just had to break into the Train song until my wife made me shut up. “He’s a WHAT, he’s a WHAT, he’s a MUSIC MAN!” I can do the whole thing.
South Pacific In Hi-Fi by the Chico Hamilton sextet is a pretty good album. My dad's jazz collection mostly consisted of Chico or his sidemen, although sadly he never followed up on the ones with Dolphy.
Best of all for a political junkie: Fiorello.
"Happy talk" sung by Nancy Wilson, along with Cannonball Adderley. I knew this before I was

The 2001 version (Glenn Close as Nellie) makes an interesting contrast. Worth watching.

Correction: quintet. Sorry.
