I checked out of the debate after 15 minutes. I knew we were in trouble after 15 seconds. Trump must have known it too, since he declined to take much advantage of Biden’s numerous and evident disabilities. He just poured out his poison. I keep thinking of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, another old biddy past her sell-by date whose refusal to resign when a Democratic replacement was feasible gave us the current intolerable 6-3 Trumpy Supreme Court. I also think back to Sergeant Shriver, whose 11th hour replacement of Tom Eagleton in 1972 did not save George McGovern.
By now there is virtually nothing left, for all its depredations, of the old American establishment. The CNN anchors sat there bug-eyed in the face of Trump’s wild lies. If the Deep State amounted to anything, it would have put some banana peels in Trump’s path by now. The Democratic gerontocracy is failing, big-time, but the younger ones are no ball of fire either. They are letting Israel’s agents bully their own left wing; the tail is wagging the dog.
I see the following key aspects of the impending poison.
The most important is the completely unhinged anti-immigrant rhetoric, which to me signals race war. People of color who think any such attacks will be confined to Latins are deluding themselves. The impulse being catered to can never be satiated, since its underlying motivations are not assuaged by any policy, no matter how craven.
Trump has already cast Jews as non-citizens whose loyalty is properly to Israel. The is the greatest threat to the Diaspora, not incidentally aided enthusiastically by the most fanatical followers of Zionist fascism, the kapos of tomorrow.
What four more years of Trump would do to our public sector, to my own blooming Social Security which I absolutely depend on, will keep me up at night.
Possible regional war in the Mideast, triggered by a Trump assault on Iran. The latter has many weapons to strike back, and if any hit the U.S., we’re off to the races with 9-11 2.0 and the great civilization of Iran is a memory.
Often I could not understand what Biden was saying. I put it down at least partially to the fact that I have 50 percent hearing loss and I was not wearing my hearing aids. I could tell, however, when he was being defensive in his responses when it came to late abortion, which he should have hit out of the park, and those bloodthirsty immigrant hordes ravaging our cities.
I’m told Italy is a nice place for Americans to reside. The real estate is cheap, the food is fabulous. Meloni, my friends tell me, is not an old-style Mussolini fascist. However, it’s not clear that anywhere one might want to live would be safe from the reach of an authoritarian U.S. government. The only shelter is being too unimportant to bother with. I certainly qualify on that score.
Can we push our way past this? I’d like to think so. If voters lack the perspicacity to reject Trump, no matter how infirm Biden looks, I’m not sure what else matters.
You are doing good, making important points in your writing -- as usual. And your readers might consider the path of activism: contact their local Democratic Party affiliate, and volunteer to canvass, make phone calls (including from home), write post cards.
Persuading the opposition is less important and less feasible than getting out allied individuals' votes. Get out the vote, GOTV! It's not too early to contact the Democratic Party and let them get you started.
For those of us who turned it off early (I'm one), I suggest looking at the transcript:

Biden looked and sounded worse than the transcript shows. He's still capable of providing a more sensible answer to the questions asked. Trump, to use Bannon's memorable phrase, flooded the zone with shit. Biden was overwhelmed, unable to effectively respond in 1 or 2 minutes.
